Profile: The University of the Philippines, the
premier institution of higher learning in the country, was
founded in 1908. U.P. Diliman is the flagship campus in the
seven-campus U.P. system. Total enrollment in 1999-2000 was
more than 26,000, including approximately 300 international
students.
U.P. Diliman was formally designated as an autonomous
campus in 1982. The 493-hectare campus in Quezon City is also
the site of the U.P. System Administration offices. It also
administers the programs in two regional centers: U.P.
Clark/San Fernando and U.P. Olongapo. The University Library
System maintains a collection of more than one million
volumes. The U.P. Computer Center and the U.P. Press are both
located in Diliman. U.P. Diliman has 23 degree-granting units.
Other facilities include 10 residential halls, a health
service, a shopping center and recreational facilities. The
International Center accommodates international students and
has a capacity of approximately 170 residents. The U.P. Balay
Kalinaw can also house visiting professors and exchange
students.
